Training in
the Miami heat

What extreme heat does to your body, how CMTeam uses it in your favor and what happens when the weather cools down.

Anyone training in Miami in the summer knows it: this isn’t just heat, it’s extreme heat. Heart rate climbs fast, effort feels harder and even easy sessions feel heavy. But there is an upside, backed by science: training in the heat, with strategy and safety, produces adaptations similar to the ones athletes look for at altitude.

What heat does to your body

  1. 1
More blood in circulation. Plasma volume increases and the heart pumps more oxygen with every beat. The result: the same intensity starts to cost less.
  2. 2
A smarter thermostat. After a few days of exposure you sweat more effectively, keep your core temperature more stable and feel less overwhelmed by the heat.
  3. 3
Stress tolerance. The body activates protective proteins (heat shock proteins) that help you handle effort better, not only in the heat but also in mild conditions.
  4. 4
A small blood bonus. Some studies show that longer blocks in the heat can slightly stimulate hemoglobin production, a classic altitude-training effect.

In short: this summer is forging your cardiovascular system and your mental toughness. It isn’t pointless suffering; it’s adaptation that stays.

How we apply it at CMTeam

Nothing here is improvised. Every session is planned so the heat works for you, not against you.

Heat with a method

Shorter sessions on extreme-heat days, to limit exposure.

Load control: we adjust intensity and volume so the body adapts instead of breaking down.

Ongoing monitoring: heat costs more energy, and that is already in our math.

This is applied science: we use the latest exercise physiology to turn Miami’s reality into a tool for progress.

And when the weather cools down?

That’s when the work shows. A heat-adapted body carries a kind of positive ballast. When the temperature drops, the weight goes away, but the adaptations stay.

What changesWhy
Lower heart rateAt the same pace, because the heart has become more efficient.
Effort feels easierRunning 8:03/mi (5:00/km) at 68 °F feels much lighter than the same speed at 90 °F.
Better coolingMore effective sweating and a lower risk of overheating.
More mental toughnessAfter weeks of sweating in Miami, running in cool weather feels almost like a relief.
Important

Physiology isn’t exact. Every athlete responds differently, depending on biological individuality, commitment to the process and factors like sleep, stress and routine. There is no guarantee everyone will see the same gains, but science shows a clear trend of benefit.

Rules that never change

  1. Hydrate constantly: don’t wait until you’re thirsty.
  2. Replace electrolytes: water alone isn’t enough.
  3. Fuel well before, during and after: the right fuel is part of training.
  4. Sunscreen, always: it’s not just performance, it’s health.
  5. Sunglasses and a cap: protection from radiation and thermal comfort.
  6. Listen to your body: dizziness, nausea, headache or chills are not part of the game.
Warning signs

If you feel dizziness, nausea, headache or chills, slow down, find shade and cool your body. If the signs don’t go away, or there is any confusion, stop the session and get help.

What to take away

Training in Miami’s heat is hard, but treat it as an opportunity, not a punishment. With hydration, electrolytes, good nutrition and protected skin, heat stops being the enemy and becomes a performance tool. Every well-executed session this summer builds a base that will show when the temperature drops.

Miami’s heat is not a punishment.
It’s a performance tool.
